These four nonnegotiable questions ensure the right people are in the right leader role, for the right reasons and sets up first-time leaders for success. These questions identify predictable and preventable failure and are often overlooked, because selection to lead is mistakenly viewed as a promotion instead of a career change. Your answers will determine if you should lead, not how to lead; whether you genuinely want to and accept leader responsibilities. The authenticity of your answers is determined by whether you feel comfortable answering the questions honestly. If you cannot honestly answer ‘Yes’ to all four questions, you should be allowed to remain in your current individual performer role. Sometimes the best career decision is not becoming a leader.
